She Overcame the Odds

Apr 19, 2022

I want to tell you about one of my amazing birthing clients recently.

Her first birth was disempowering to say the least. She was in the hospital for days on end, unable to eat or drink, unable to see her baby after the birth. She had a 4th degree tear, a seizure, pretty much anything that could go wrong, did.

Because of the difficult experience she had the first time, she became a doula, so she could learn more about how to help other birthing people have a different story than hers. I met her in a doula workshop and knew she was a power-house!

When she became pregnant again a few years later, she hoped to have a home birth. When she shared this with her OB practice, they said no way. They encouraged her to schedule a c-section because of how much she tore the first time.

When she had her 20 week anatomy scan they told her that she had placenta previa and it was unlikely she would be able to have a vaginal birth, but they were willing to check again in a couple months. At the SECOND recheck the placenta was completely out of the way!

When the placenta moved, they told her that her baby was breech and that she still might need to deliver by cesarean. At her next visit with me, the baby was head down.

When she went for an ultrasound to confirm that baby was no longer breech, they told her that because she had COVID during pregnancy, her baby was not growing enough and she might need to be induced early. When I felt baby, she felt normal sized, and another followup ultrasound confirmed this.

This powerful birther was told over and over again that she could not have the birth she wanted. But she never gave up hope. She continued to plan her home birth. She talked to her baby about the birth and told her that wherever she wanted to be born would be ok, but that she hoped it would be at home.

Her water broke before bed one night, and the next morning she had still not gone into labor. She asked me to come by and check on her and baby. We discussed what it might look like to transfer to the hospital… but she still did not give up hope. An hour later her baby was in her arms.

She had a beautiful, fast, miraculous home birth against all odds. And she didn’t even tear.

WOW!

I am so grateful that I get to witness these powerful people and their magical babies claim their births as they change the world one decision at a time.

Thank you for allowing me to share in pieces of your world as well. I would love to hear about how feel you claimed your power in your birth! Share with me in our Baby Led Birth group on FB or email me :)
